Our History

Whelan Schwartz Funeral Home has been serving the families of Reading and Berks County for over half-a-century. We have always believed that everyone should be able to afford a dignified, full-service funeral.

Francis J. “Bud” Whelan grew up at 1426 North 11th Street in Reading and was a 1934 graduate of Reading High School.

In 1946 Francis J. “Bud” Whelan established the Whelan Funeral Home at 444 North 9th Street in Reading, Pennsylvania. Licensed as a Funeral Director on January 12, 1940, and prior to establishing the Whelan Funeral Home, Mr. Whelan had worked at the Auman Funeral Home at 247 Penn Street in Reading. Along with his wife Diana Mr. Whelan served families with compassion and care at low funeral prices. In fact, Mr. Whelan’s price advertising made him an overnight success. Mr. Whelan was a very fair man and he was very particular, and was always impeccably dressed. In the beginning, Mr. Whelan rented a hearse and limousine from the late Malcolm Kroninger, who owned and operated the Kroninger Funeral Home in nearby Mohnton, PA. Today, the funeral home that Mr. Kroninger established is known as the Giles & Yeckley Funeral Home.

Mr. Whelan owned and operated the funeral for many years and became affiliated with Dick Mountz from Robesonia. The funeral home then became known as the Whelan & Mountz funeral home until Mr. Mountz retired. Later, Mr. Whelan became partners with Ken Fleischmann and the funeral home became known as the Whelan & Fleischmann Funeral Home. When Ken Fleischmann’s son-in-law, Todd Schwartz, came in to the business. The business was known and the Whelan, Fleischmann and Schwartz Funeral Home. As always, today, Whelan Schwartz Funeral Home continues as a family owned business and maintains it’s leadership and long standing tradition of low cost funerals and low cost cremation services while serving the families of the greater Reading, PA area with impeccable service, dignity and respect.
