Burial Explained

Burial is the act of placing a deceased human body into the earth to decompose. Burial may also refer to the burial rites associated with death, either generally or within a particular religious tradition. Burials without a coffin are sometimes referred to as "burial at ground level", while those with a coffin may be interred in an above-ground mausoleum, great barn, crypt, sepulcher, or another space suitably equipped for overnight stays.

What is the Difference Between Funeral and Burial

Burial is the act of putting a body into the ground, whereas a funeral is considered to be a gathering commemorating someone's life before they are buried. Burial rites may be general or specific to a particular religious tradition. Burials can be simple or elaborate, and often include the use of a casket or urn.

What Happens at A Burial

A burial can occur at various locations either on your property or at a cemetery, crematorium, or other location. Burials are carried out following the rites of various faiths.

When planning for burial, there are many details to consider including what your wishes are. Burial is an emotional time but getting organized will help you through this challenging time.

Your loved one's body is placed into a casket that may be buried directly into the ground or laid above the ground inside a crypt, mausoleum, or tomb chamber. Some people prefer to have their casket placed above ground where family members and visitors can see it.

If the casket is not enclosed in a vault or grave liner, then weights should be placed on top to prevent the casket from sinking into the earth.

What is the Cheapest Way to Be Buried

A standard burial package includes the services of a funeral director and staff, transfer of the deceased to the funeral home, embalming or other preparation of the body, use of a hearse and other necessary equipment, a gravesite, opening and closing of the grave, and a grave liner or vault.

The cost of burial may vary depending on whether you choose an elaborate ceremony or something simpler. You will also need to purchase a burial plot and pay for any headstone or markers that you choose.

What is Direct Burial

Direct Burial or immediate burial is the simplest method of disposing of human remains, there are no special preparations to make. The body is placed into a casket which is then buried in the ground without any special care or service. Most people who choose direct burial do it because they prefer not to have their loved ones' remains disturbed by unnecessary services or rituals. There are many reasons why people might choose direct burial. Some people find it less expensive than traditional funerals and more affordable for families who can’t avail traditional burial services.

What Happens During a Traditional Funeral Service

A traditional funeral service typically includes a viewing of the deceased, followed by a funeral ceremony. The body is usually buried soon after the funeral ceremony. In some cases, immediate burial or direct burial may be chosen instead of a traditional funeral service.

What is the Purpose of a Funeral Ceremony

There are many different reasons why people may choose to hold a funeral ceremony. For some, it may be an opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones and express their grief openly. Others may find comfort in the traditional rituals and shared experience of a funeral. Some people may view the funeral as an important step in the healing process, while others may see it as a way of honoring their loved one's life.

What Should You Expect from A Funeral Director During a Burial Service

Funeral directors play many important roles during burial services, the most important of which is helping families navigate the process and ensuring that all arrangements are conducted following the family's wishes. They also often help to coordinate the burial with the cemetery or crematorium and can provide advice and support to families who are grieving. In addition, funeral directors may also provide additional services such as creating funeral programs or arranging for transportation of the deceased. Their goal is to ensure that each burial service is a meaningful and respectful experience for the family and friends of the deceased.
