John Addison Weishampel, 94, Wernersville, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Phoebe Berks Village Health Care Center. John and his widow, Mary Jo (Barbera) Weishampel recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Born in East Orange, NJ, July 29, 1931, he was the son of the late John Addison and Laura
(Eckberg) Weishampel. John served four years in the US Navy during the Korean War, and was stationed in Newfoundland and Morocco with the VP10 Squadron of the US Naval Air Patrol. John graduated from Ada High School in Ada, Ohio and briefly attended Ohio Northern University in Ada before enlisting in th navy. After an Honorable Discharge, John enrolled in Albright College in Reading, where he met his future bride, Mary Jo. Graduating with honors, John was granted a B.S. Degree in Economics in 1958. He was hired as an auditor by Price Waterhouse in New York City, a public accounting, auditing and tax advisory firm (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). He then was hired by Carpenter Technology Corporation from which he retired as manager of corporate taxes 34 years later. In 1982, he passed the exam to become a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in PA.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his sons, John F. Weishampel and his wife, Teresa Riedel, of Oviedo, FL and Peter A. Weishampel, Land O’ Lakes, WI; two grandsons, Anthony C. Weishampel (Ellen Hammett) and Zachary A. Weishampel (Xiomara Nieves); two great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Lisa Marie Dietrich; siblings Florence Spurney, Clara Lawton and Samuel A. Weishampel.
John volunteered his financial expertise with several organizations. He served as treasurer of the Reading Symphony Orchestra, the First Unitarian-Universalist Church of Berks County (a member for 58 years) and other organizationss. He also helped other groups and friends with their tax returns and other financial issues. He mentored several students in the Reading School District and helped with YMCA Indian Guides (now called Adventure Guides). He participated in the Poor People’s Campaigns in the 1960’s. He delivered Meals on Wheels for Berks Encore.
During the short time he worked in NYC, John started to play competitive duplicate bridge which he continued to pursue when he returned to Reading. He loved playing the game and competed in many local, regional and national tournaments. The American Contract Bridge League assigns master points to its bridge playing members who quali, and ranks them according to the number of points they accumulate. He achieved the rank of a Sapphire Life Master, a very high ranking. He was well-known and highly respected in the duplicate bridge world.
John was also an avid sports fan. Baseball was at the top of the list followed by tennis which he played. His favorite baseball team was the Brooklyn Dodgers (now Los Angeles Dodgers) His favorite college team was Ohio State University. He enjoyed watching kids play as well as professional teams. John was an excellent source for detailed information about past sporting events.
Another interest of John’s was world history. It was phenomenal how knowledgeable he was about historical events that occurred throughout the ages.
John has donated his body for the advancement of scientific research through the Human Gift Registry of PA. His wish was to not have a funeral service. However, friends are invited to join his family for an informal Celebration of Life on Saturday,
June 20, 10:00 AM in the chapel of Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville. Reverend John Cullinan, minister of our church will join us. Donations in John’ s memory can be made to First Unitarian-Universalist Church of Berks County, 416 Franklin Street, Reading, PA 19602. A light lunch will be served after the celebration at Phoebe Berks Village..
John was a man of integrity, kind and gentle, caring and loving. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend to many. We will miss him.
