Ms. Maria Acosta Torres Plaza, 82, of Reading, Pennsylvania died Monday, January 12th at her home after a long battle with illness, surrounded by her family.

Maria was born in Loiza, Puerto Rico in 1943, and had two sons, Sixto and Armando. She moved to the United States in the mid 1970s and resided in New York City. Soon after, she met her husband, Tomas Torres, a United States Army Veteran, got married, and raised her granddaughter Jasmine, born in May of 1990 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Tomas unfortunately passed away in June of 2010 at the age of 75.

She was a former member of Brooklyn’s Non-Sectarian Church of God, was a homemaker and food caterer, and a beloved member of New York City’s community until 2013 before moving to Reading, where she built community, stayed close to family, and lived out the remainder of her life. Maria was a caring, compassionate, and loving woman and mother. She never hesitated to break bread and open her home and her heart to any one in need of love and understanding.

Maria was witty, funny, and was never afraid to be the heart of the party. She loved Tito Rodriguez, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Frankie Ruiz, Jose Jose, and of course Rocio Durcal, among many other Hispanic musical artists. She loved vintage Mexican action movies, and novelas. She even loved to people watch through shows like Caso Cerrado.

A red lip was her go to and never compromised on glamour wherever she went. She loved cooking, and Lipton soup with potatoes and loved to begin her days with a little bit of bread and tea. Her pastels were top notch. She loved long phone conversations, going to the casino, and strolling down Penn. Her loss has left a void in those who survive her, as she was the pillar and matriarch of our family, speaking softly, but still carrying a big stick.

Survivors include her daughter Jasmine and grandchildren Estrella, Yolymar, Jose, Angel, Ordaliz, Maria, and Eric; her great grandchildren Alijahh, Adriana, America, Avery, Jadiel, Shamar, Duyrea, Brooklyn, Anayis, Ava, and Jacob. She is also survived by her nephew Miguel and Yariel, and nieces Samantha and Mariffer. Lastly, she is survived by her fur babies and fur grandbabies Peabo, Gandalf, Snupee, and Cookie.

The service will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026 rom 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. at Whelan Schwartz Funeral Home, located at 444 N 9th Street, Reading, PA, 19601.

She will be laid to rest alongside her husband Tomas in Calverton National Cemetery, located in Wading River, NY at a later time.

La Sra. María Acosta Torres Plaza, de 82 años, de Reading, Pensilvania, murió el lunes 12 de enero en su casa después de una larga batalla contra la enfermedad, rodeada de su familia. 

María nació en Loiza, Puerto Rico en 1943 y tuvo dos hijos, Sixto y Armando. Se mudó a los Estados Unidos a mediados de la década de 1970 y residió en la ciudad de Nueva York. Poco después conoció a su esposo, Tomás Torres, un veterano del ejército de los Estados Unidos, se casó y crió a su nieta Jasmine, nacida en mayo de 1990 en Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Desafortunadamente Tomás falleció en junio de 2010 a la edad de 75 años. 

Fue miembro de la Iglesia de Dios No Sectaria de Brooklyn, fue ama de casa y proveedora de alimentos, y un miembro querido de la comunidad de la ciudad de Nueva York hasta 2013 antes de mudarse a Reading, donde construyó una comunidad, permaneció cerca de su familia y vivió el resto de su vida. María era una mujer y madre cariñosa, compasiva y amorosa. Nunca dudó en partir el pan y abrir su casa y su corazón a cualquiera que necesitara amor y comprensión. 

María era ingeniosa, divertida y nunca tuvo miedo de ser el corazón de la fiesta. Amaba a Tito Rodríguez, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Frankie Ruiz, José José y, por supuesto, Rocío Dúrcal, entre muchos otros artistas musicales hispanos. Le encantaban las novelas y las películas de acción mexicanas antiguas. Incluso le encantaba que la gente mirara programas como Caso Cerrado. 

Su preferencia era un labio rojo y nunca comprometió el glamour dondequiera que fuera. Le encantaba cocinar y la sopa Lipton con patatas y le encantaba empezar el día con un poco de pan y té. Sus pasteles eran de primera categoría. Le encantaban las largas conversaciones telefónicas, ir al casino y pasear por Penn. Su pérdida ha dejado un vacío en quienes la sobreviven, ya que ella era el pilar y matriarca de nuestra familia, hablaba en voz baja, pero aún llevaba un gran garrote. 

Le sobreviven su hija Jasmine y sus nietos Estrella, Yolymar, José, Ángel, Ordaliz, María y Eric; sus bisnietos Alijahh, Adriana, America, Avery, Jadiel, Shamar, Duyrea, Brooklyn, Anayis, Ava y Jacob. También le sobreviven su sobrino Miguel y Yariel, y sus sobrinas Samantha y Mariffer. Por último, le sobreviven sus bebés peludos y sus nietos peludos Peabo, Gandalf, Snupee y Cookie. 

El servicio se realizará el Viernes, 16 de enero de 15:00 a 17:00 horas. en Whelan Schwartz Funeral Home, ubicada en 444 N 9th Street, Reading, PA, 19601. Ella será enterrada junto a su esposo Tomas en el Cementerio Nacional de Calverton, ubicado en Wading River, Nueva York, más adelante.
