Valerie Lynn Upsey was born on March 22, 1955, and lived a life marked by strength, resilience, dignity, and unwavering devotion to her family. From an early age, Valerie learned to navigate life with courage and independence. Though she endured hardship and loss early in life, those experiences never defined her. Instead, they shaped a woman of quiet determination, steadfast character, and enduring grace.
Valerie was the youngest daughter of William and Doris and one of eight children. She was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she attended Haddon Heights High School. Though her formal education ended after high school, Valerie never stopped learning. Self-taught in many areas, especially the law, she was outspoken, strong-willed, and never afraid to stand up for herself or those she loved.
She was the beloved wife of Christopher Upsey and a loving and devoted mother to Sheri, Eric, Tawana, Victoria, and Tomachell. Valerie’s journey through life was not without challenges, but she met each one with courage, strength, and an unshakable commitment to those she loved.
Above all, Valerie treasured her family. She was a devoted and affectionate grandmother who found immeasurable joy in her grandchildren. She took pride in knowing their interests, celebrating their accomplishments, and creating lasting memories with them. No matter how busy life became, Val always made time for a phone call, a FaceTime conversation, a thoughtful card, or a loving gesture. Her grandchildren knew they were deeply loved, cherished, and supported.
For many years, Valerie dedicated herself to her work at Brookside Country Club, where she was respected for her reliability, consistency, and exceptional work ethic. She carried herself with grace and dignity, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
On the afternoon of May 3, 2026, Valerie peacefully transitioned from labor to reward. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill Frame and Doris Hainey; her beloved husband, Christopher Upsey; and her siblings, William “Binky,” Arthur “Herby,” Ramon, Sterling, and LaVaughn “Butch.”
Valerie leaves to cherish her precious memory her children, Sheri (Mark), Eric (Kaysha), Tawana (Eric), Victoria (Mehdi), and Tomachell (Andre); her sisters, Marion and Tanya; her aunt, Anita; her beloved grandchildren, D’Andre (Diamond), Ebony, Jaylene, Jullian, Andrew, Jaylen, Parrys, Grace, and Trulyn; her great-grandchildren, Logan, Eloni, Alonna (Chocolate); a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends; and her devoted caregivers, Denise, Lisa, Diana and Tamara, whose kindness, care, and companionship brought comfort and support throughout her journey.
Valerie’s life was marked by perseverance, love, and devotion to family. Though she will be deeply missed, her strength and spirit will live on in all who knew and loved her.
