John Yerger

September 28, 1946 — July 23, 2022

Reading,PA

John K. Yerger – dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend – passed away in his residence in Reading, PA on Saturday July 23, 2022.  He was the beloved husband of Mary Ellen (Kissinger) Yerger. Together they shared 42 years of Blissful marriage. Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Leon and Grace (Grill) Yerger. During his life, he worked as a Manager for Northeastern Lumber Company, Inc. and Windkit Company in Reading for over 25 years, retiring in 2001. Through the years, John enjoyed carpentry and loved remodeling their homes.  John also was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed going to the Carlisle Auction. Nothing made him happier than to sit and talk with family or friends about absolutely anything. He literally had a story for every occasion and no matter the audience, they were always intrigued. He fought challenges physically for years but never gave up. John was always willing to help out anyone he could. He will be missed and fondly remembered. He loved Garth Brooks and enjoyed Jerry Blavat and listening to his radio show and singing “Oldies”

Being a grandfather came naturally to John. His grandkids loved him and enjoyed his stories as well. He could rattle off all their birthdays on command and tell you the weather on that day and where exactly he was. They all brought him so much joy and happiness.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen Yerger, of Reading; son, Brian Yerger, of Reading; step sons, Rudolph Schoning, husband of Crystal, of Reading; Troy Schoning, husband of Melanie, of Mt. Penn; step daughter, Kathleen Mueller, of Sinking Spring; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Services will be private at the request of the family. Whelan & Schwartz Funeral Home Inc. Reading, PA will be handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made to www.whelanschwartz.com.
